What are some Great Ideas?
Every SkillsUSA chapter has something special that they have accomplished in the areas of:
- Professional development
- Community service
- Public relations
- Employment
- SkillsUSA Championships
- Social Activities
- Ways and means
These “Great Ideas” are something that many of you have told us that you would like to share with other chapters. Until now, SkillsUSA hasn’t had a specific Web page devoted to the things you do best – until now!
For example, did you know that when it comes to fundraising…
- One SkillsUSA chapter received a 100 dollar donation, and pondered the idea of turning the $100 into a $1000. With gas prices as high as they are a $100 gas card was purchased and raffled off at $2 each. They made $1500 on that fundraiser - enough to go to state!
- Another chapter that was in an economically strapped mining town went to work on their fundraiser knowing in advance that it would have to be well advertised and planned. They learned this lesson the previous year when they missed their fundraising goal to attend the state conference by $1,000. Chapter members pitched-in and did jobs around the school, redoing the interior of the football press box, among other things. For this they earned over $1500 dollars, giving them a surplus of $500. Before you know it, they were hired to landscape the baseball, softball, and football fields, raising another $600 dollars. They now have $1,100 in the bank to start next year’s fundraiser.
- A chapter in the southwest decided to do an enchilada dinner for $5 a plate. Each member of the chapter (16) was asked to sell 20 tickets. All this was done and coordinated by one savvy student. The dinner was advertised on the radio, in newspapers and flyers. Better yet, the date was selected to coordinate with a Friday night baseball tournament. Budgeting $100 for the community center, $200 for corn tortillas and another $100 for cheese, the chapter received the rest of the ingredients (beans, chili, vegetables, trays, plates, utensils, etc) as a donation from local businesses. After a long day of everybody working super hard they made $2,700 dollars. They were almost to their goal and still had another month before their deadline.
For example when it comes to membership recruitment and chapter promotion...
The Florida Community College at Jacksonville played the DVD "Week of Champions" on the educational access cable channel in Jacksonville, Florida. Their intent in showing this
program was strictly for promotional purposes as well as for general interest. They cablecast the DVD through Comcast in Northeast Florida to a five county area reaching approximately 250,000 homes.
