Honoring the Men in Blue

SkillsUSA members at the Alliance Academy for Innovation in Cumming, Ga., hosted a breakfast to honor their school’s resource officer for National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.  They decided to extend their gratitude for local law enforcement by inviting the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, too. The school offers courses in healthcare, firefighting and criminal justice, all of which work in conjunction with the county’s sheriff’s department, fire department and local healthcare professionals. They’re Sharing Spirit for Our Soldiers

Students from South Pasadena (Calif.) High School are making their mark in the local community by supporting military members and their families. That support took the form of two focused community service projects devised, developed and carried out by SkillsUSA American Spirit team members Jolene Lee, Andrew Cheung and Luyang Zhang. The first project saw the trio collecting shoes from South Pasadena schools for a shoe drive to support the American Soldier Network. Friendly Competition for Good

Students at UniTec Career Center in Bonne Terre, Mo., didn’t just take part in an annual SkillsUSA canned food drive; they set a record for the most cans ever collected at the event. The drive is set up as a friendly competition between different programs within the career center, designed to help students practice teamwork while learning to serve their community. Students used their personal skills to spread the word about the fundraiser, and UniTec decided to continue the drive in the future while creating new community service initiatives for years to come. SkillsUSA has updated the “SkillsUSA: Clothing and Tools” app for 2020. This is a great starter resource that does not replace the SkillsUSA Championships Technical Standards but connects users to SkillsUSA’s membership site, where educators can join as professional members to receive the full standards at no charge. For each contest, the new “SkillsUSA: Clothing and Tools” app includes an overview, clothing requirements, and eligibility and safety guidelines, as well as lists the specific tools, equipment or materials that contestants need to provide. SkillsUSA Week 2020 Highlights Advocacy in Washington, D.C.

SkillsUSA staff and national officers carried out several advocacy events Feb. 4-5 as part of SkillsUSA Week and CTE Month. On Feb. 4, 12 members of the national officer team, executive director Chelle Travis and select staff started the day at the Old Ebbitt Grill in Washington, D.C., where SkillsUSA held a legislative breakfast. Seventeen High Schools Win Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Start-Up Grants for SkillsUSA Chapters

SkillsUSA and Lowe’s Home Improvement have teamed up on a new grant program to support emerging SkillsUSA programs in career and technical education classrooms across the nation. The $100,000 grant from Lowe’s provides 100 eligible chapters with $1,000 worth of educational materials. A Vision of Healing for Veterans

In Ohio, SkillsUSA members raised $3,700 to support local veterans at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center’s Mace House. Students met with staff and landscapers to share their plan for a “healing garden” where veterans could spend time with their families and friends. From planting trees and shrubs to refurbishing wooden benches, these students from Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center hope to continue with the upkeep and maintenance of the garden in the future. Students Offer Free Auto Checks

With winter making its way to Yelm, Wash., high-school automotive students got a firsthand look at how to prepare a vehicle outside of the classroom. They set up shop in a local parking lot, along with SkillsUSA advisor Brandon Hoke, to perform free safety checks for their community as part of the annual Lights On for Safety event. NAPA Auto Parts donated tools and parts to the automotive program to  help. Students learned how to cater to each customer’s needs by using a checklist and writing down what each car needed.
