Help Launch the SkillsUSA Hope Fund

The SkillsUSA Hope Fund was established in 2019 to provide emergency scholarships for individual students in crisis to further their trade education, and for chapters affected by natural disasters. The fund is building during 2019 and we anticipate opening scholarships in 2020. We encourage our SkillsUSA staff, state association directors, board and foundation members, teachers and all stakeholders and supporters to consider making a donation to help the fund launch the Hope Fund. CTSO Student Leaders Showcase CTE

On Tuesday, March 26, the Senate CTE Caucus hosted a reception at the Dirksen Senate Office Building for Members of Congress and their staffs, titled “CTE Success: Student Leaders in Action”. The reception tied into ACTE’s National Policy Seminar and was attended by Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Todd Young (R-IN), who both made remarks pro cv . WorldSkills USA Team Trains at 3M

On March 11-12, the WorldSkills USA team members and their experts, traveled to St. Paul, Minn., for two days of training at 3M’s headquarters. The first day was spent in team building activities, scenario training and learning what to expect in Kazan, Russia. The next day, competitors enjoyed mentor discussions, information sessions and toured the 3M Innovation Center. NTU Pack Helps Wild Canines Find Sanctuary

Frank, Navajo Technical University.  The SkillsUSA chapter at Navajo Technical University (NTU) in Crownpoint, N.M., provides much-needed assistance to the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in nearby Ramah. From welding to landscaping to building fences, students take on this work to allow the sanctuary’s staff to focus on the animals. The Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization that is celebrating its 15th year of rescuing wolves, hybrid wolf dogs, wild dogs, dingoes, coyotes, New Guinea singing dogs and one fox. Helping With Open Arms

In San Angelo, Texas, Central High School human services students have stepped up to help victims of sexual assault. With the assistance of local women’s empowerment group Dazzling Dames, students put together gift bags of toiletries and blankets for the Open Arms recovery center. They called their project HOPE, an acronym for having faith, overcoming the enemy, pressing on, and empowerment for life. Read More

Meals, Wheels for Stranded Pets

When Hurricane Harvey devastated the Gulf Coast of Texas, students at El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) Center for Career and Technology Education showed up to help displaced pets at two facilities: the Animal Rescue League of El Paso and MuttLove Dog Rescue. Students held drives for donations of pet supplies. In addition, the veterinary technology class built a wheelchair for a dog named Camila who had lost use of her back legs. With a Program Short on Funds, Students Combine Skills to Help

Students from Central Technology Center in Drumright, Okla., raised $1,500 for Cleveland Public Schools, a feeder system in need of funding. Welding/fabrication students worked with the diesel technology class to build outdoor furniture and custom signs. The items were sold in conjunction with a car show and auction held by the Octane Outlaws of Cleveland. The students are bronze medal winners in SkillsUSA’s college/postsecondary Community Action competition.
