SkillsUSA executive director Tim Lawrence received a Founders Award as part of a CareerSafe event Feb. 22 to celebrate the milestone of 1 million students trained in safety. In conjunction with Career and Technical Education Month, CareerSafe reached its goal of training 1 million students in foundational safety, health and security. The organization hosted an event at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center, dubbed “A Million Safer.” The event included speeches from founding contributors and key supporters including administrators and teachers, the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) office, the Texas governor’s office, the Association for Career and Technical Education, SkillsUSA and HOSA–Future Health Professionals. Congratulating SkillsUSA executive director Tim Lawrence on the Founders Award was (l-r) Larry Teverbaugh, CEO of CareerSafe, along with Texas state officers Deandre Johnson and Jada Rock, and Lisa London of CareerSafe. Speaking at the event, Dr. Larry D. Teverbaugh, CareerSafe CEO, said, “CareerSafe emerged from a simple vision. With the encouragement and support from OSHA Region VI, the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service and SkillsUSA, we embarked on a mission to reduce the workplace injury and fatalities associated with the least trained and experienced employees — young workers in the 16- to 24-year-old age group. While we have had a national impact, I am sad to say that even today one young worker is injured every 4.5 minutes.” The event featured displays from Austin ISD Career and Technical Education students who showcased work in audio/video marketing, healthcare, veterinary medicine, agriculture, culinary arts and other career paths. Attending the event were members from CareerSafe’s partnering organizations. The event was marked by a proclamation from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Receiving the award, Lawrence stated that he found value in initiatives that left a legacy for students to benefit from. “To Dr. Teverbaugh and his team, you’ve established an incredible program. But you’ve also established something that’s going to leave an incredible legacy.” Beyond providing safety, health and security education, CareerSafe is actively involved in youth safety initiatives including National Young Worker Safety Day, #Yes2AgSafety, Safety in Agriculture for Youth, the National Youth Safety Video Contest, Safety Educator of the Year, Youth Safety Essay Scholarships and FCCLA’s Stop the Violence.
