How SkillsUSA is Organized

Discover How SkillsUSA is Organized to Empower Students for Career Success

SkillsUSA is organized in a three-tiered system where the national organization, state association, and local chapter work to deliver opportunities, resources, and business and industry connections to student members.

The national SkillsUSA organization’s goal is to serve students preparing for technical, skilled and service careers. In order to reach more students and to serve them effectively, the national SkillsUSA organization develops a plethora of resources and opportunities to set professional and student members up for success.

SkillsUSA is a federation of 50 states and three territories, and each state association is managed by a SkillsUSA state director. The state director’s role is to plan and execute exciting state conferences and special events, providing a platform for students to showcase their skills and talents while connecting them with industry leaders and potential employers.

SkillsUSA advisors will register students as SkillsUSA members and will pay state and national dues. Once student members are registered, advisors can register students for events such as the Fall Leadership Conference, Region Championships and the State Leadership and Skills Conference. Advisors can contact their state director for support in the following areas:

  • Chapter Support
  • Program and Conference Support
  • Career Competitions
  • Chapter Excellence Program
  • Program of Work
  • Recruitment

Connecting directly with your SkillsUSA state director will ensure you are included in all communications, and they can provide assistance in the successful formation of your chapter.

Local chapters affiliate with SkillsUSA through the state association and a charter is issued to the school. The local chapter provides a safe place for students to explore new skills, step into leadership opportunities and connect with local business and industry partners. Advisors should consider their SkillsUSA chapter as the training ground for students to learn personal, workplace and technical skills. A chapter should provide rich experiences that prepare students for career success. To make that a reality, students must be the ones organizing and leading the chapter.

The SkillsUSA chapter advisor organizes and oversees the following items:

  • Chapter Recruitment
  • Chapter Management
  • Chapter Officer Election and Training
  • State and National Event Registration
  • SkillsUSA Program of Work
  • Chapter Excellence Program
  • Chapter Activities
  • Fall Leadership Conference Participation
  • Region Championships Participation
  • State Leadership and Skills Conference Participation
  • National Leadership and Skills Conference Participation
